P&L Motorsports Subaru Drag car runs 8.99 @160mph.

The day has come! We did it! Absolutely a big team effort! P&L Motorsports and our 07 Subaru STI Dragcar have broken into the 8 second time zone. It was a long day at the track as a lot of cars were breaking and we only got to do 4 passes in 8 hours. Finally on the last run of the day everything came together.

This result would not be possible without the knowledge and dedication of the people we have working here at P&L, I cannot be more proud of the team we have here! It just goes to show what can be accomplished with the right people behind you.

Fast eddy you are the man!
JR AEM genius thank yo!

We would like to thank our sponsors.

P&L Motorsports partners with KW Suspension!

P&L Motorsports 2007 STI DragCar

Franklin Park, IL  (Jan 21, 2011) P&L Motorsports adds KW Suspension as an official Suspension Sponsor of their 2007 STI Dragcar for the 2011 racing season.

“We are very excited to be working with a company such as KW Suspension”, said P&L President Paul Szuba.  “KW’s quality, durability, years of racing experience and suspension knowledge will play a key role in allowing our STI to set more records in the quarter mile.”

The P&L Motorsports 2007 STI Drag has netted a best of 9.5sec @ 153mph in the quarter mile. Due to some mechanical issues, the end of the 2010 season was an uneventful one,  the P&L team has worked out all the bugs and the STI has undergone a transformation. It will be piloted once again by non other than Edgar “fast eddie” Torres.

“KW Suspension is looking forward to working with P&L Motorsports and expanding our market base to the drag racing world,” said KW marketing manager George Ciordas “P&L’s professionalism and extensive knowledge of Subarus is second to none and I can’t wait to see what they can accomplish with our Suspension” added Ciordas.

KW automotive North America Inc. is an important partner for a large number of renowned companies in the automobile industry. An enormous number of refiners and manufacturers of large- and small scale series likewise rely on the suspension competence of KW automotive North America Inc.
The company was founded in 1995 and at the beginning it only existed of three employees and had an operating area of 1600 sq.ft. Today, KW automotive GmbH is represented all over the world and has approx. 200 employees in five locations. After numerous expansions at the company headquarters in Fichtenberg, the overall production- and floor space now stretches over 247,500 sq.ft. The continually growing delivery program includes many thousand applications.

P&L Motorsports Inc. was founded in 2001 operating out of a small shop in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, specializing in Subaru, Nissan, Mitsubishi, VW, Audi, Honda, Mini, BMW and Porsche vehicles . With the idea to bring quality and affordability to the performance car market, we soon realized that we have earned the trust of many customers and were running out of space. It wasn’t until Fall of 2004 when we moved in to our present location when things really took off.  Growing into Chicago’s largest and most popular performance shops through hard work, dedication to the customer, and letting our work speak for itself. The word of mouth soon spread.  Starting out with the dream of one person we currently employ 11 full time employees, operate a 11,000 square foot  state of the art facility, equipped with 5 lifts, engine assembly room, Dyno-jet 4wd dyno,Snap-On alignment machine, Tig/Mig welders and plenty of specialty tools we have a never ending amount of resources at our disposal.

9 second quarter mile times at 15PSI? Impossible?

Paul and Eddie took the car to the track the other day.  After some boost control woes, they decided to keep setting up the suspension at 15 PSI.  ;)  The video speaks for itself!

2010 Drag Car – Air Conditioning Modification!

Just got done building and doing a prelim tune on our new drag car.  Decided to take it down the track at 14 PSI.  Nice and easy out the hole, missed a shift, lost the driver side door, and STILL ran 140+ MPH!

Justin North’s STI swapped 2.5RS in 100F weather!

Had Justin come by for some fine tuning of his swapped 2.5 RS.  Sporting a Blouch Dom 3 XTR.  At our last Subaru Shootout the car clocked off a mid 11 second quarter mile, on a mild tune!  Needless to say, Justin’s always one for some tom foolery!  Good times!

A scorcher for tuning lately!

Some pretty cool cars lately for tuning!

This is that time of year where you lose 15 lbs in pure water weight alone!  This week though we had a pretty trick EVO X come in for some tuning, nothing crazy, but made almost 300WHp at 17 lbs of boost in 100F weather.

The other REALLY cool car we had was built by a long time customer and collaborator, Nick Chapman.  I’ve been tuning Nick’s cars for him for over half a decade now!  From his WRX, to his 9 second DSM drag car, to this monster!  It was a good old domestic time in the shop!

Case Study: 2007 Mazda Speed 6

Direct injection, when implemented right, has proven itself to make more power, use less fuel, and run safer, with less emissions.  Sounds like an incredible combination of benefits for the technology changes needed to really implement it properly.

Due to the tremendously high pressures involved (measured in the thousands of pounds per square inch, where typical multi-port systems are measured in the tens of pounds per square inch)  fuel atomization is so fine you can easily consume your oxygen charge, with a minimal amount of fuel.  What that means is you can use a leaner air/fuel ratio to do so.  Improving pumping efficiency, reducing peak cylinder pressures, and producing more power.

In the case of Mazda though, it seems that the one issue is with the reliability of their high pressure fuel pump.  Unfortunately, in our experience 4 out of 5 customers end up experiencing failure during tuning.

MS guys ask us all the time what we recommend prior to tuning.  Understandably the pump upgrade is on the top of the list.

The other major problem with Mazdaspeed cars is the temperamental nature of how the Requested Torque tuning technology works.

Mazdas, like other euro brands, can be tuned per gear, and by commanding a referenced level of produced power (torque, in this case).  As opposed to TPS (Alpha-N, like some Nissans), Speed Density (like certain Hondas), or Mass Air (WRX’s, EVO’s, etc).

Ironically, Mazda’s still use Mass Air for a fuel reference, but the torque management system controls everything that happens when you step on the throttle.  So, RPM may be the Y Axis reference, MAF may calculate the fuel portion of the X reference, but Z can easily be thought of as requested torque.

Where am I going with this?  Since the calculated load reference is very subjective to each car, and its modifications, E-Tuning, OTS (Off the shelf) mapping, etc, simply doesn’t work the vast majority of the time.

This car (reference the dyno plot), is that point personified.  Boost spiking to 23+ PSI, running rich to the point of misfiring, and pulling 20-30 HP at a time in timing, its very obvious there were issues.

After tuning, you can see (reference the log snippet as well that the car is able to run in a much more favorable AFR, maintaining proper fuel pressure, with great boost response, as well as ZERO knock.  Picking up almost 40 HP in certain areas of the power band, it just goes to show how nice Mazdas can tune, if you wrap your mind around them properly!

Busy start to the week of 06/14/2010!

A very busy start to the week!  Showroom construction is now on hardware installation for the displays.  Should have the showroom up and running by the end of the week.

For tuning, we had SCCA Auto-X champ Colin Fiedler, and his wife Julie come by and hang out for the afternoon.  Can’t go into much about his car, but it ended up on a nice test drive with Colin and I.  We probably spent a good 20 minutes going over the finer points of rev-matching and heel toe shifting, and how we can improve on it via electronic throttle changes.

As can be imagined, the vast majority of our inventory and was displaced by the damaged done to the shop with the bad weather!  So, at best, we’re running at 60% efficiency right now.  But, despite that, we still are trudging along!

Fabrication has four turbo kit orders that just came in, that they’re starting to allocate for.  Eddie and Geno are working on Chad Moses’ pretty pimp, and sponsored STI.  We have Paul in back doing his diligence, assembling race engines for some various privateer teams, and Mark is being Mark!  ;)  …always living it up with customers!

Been a good day so far… and its only Monday!
